Back to Basics

Back to Basics

I solve problems every day. It’s my job.

I’m Becka Thompson, and I’m running for City Council in Ward 12. I’ve taught high school and college math for over 20 years, so I excel at understanding financial reports and budgets. I serve on the Minneapolis Park Board, where I chair the Administration and Finance Committee,

Listen, here in Minneapolis we need to get back to the basics because that’s what the City Council is supposed to focus on. Think potholes, public safety, and property taxes. The basics might sound boring, but that’s the job of a city council member: fix what needs fixing so people can live their lives safely and optimistically.

Let’s take a look at each of those three P’s.

Potholes

When I say “potholes,” I mean the everyday work that keeps a city functioning smoothly. Streets that don’t crumble. Sidewalks and crosswalks that are safe. Parks and public spaces maintained on schedule. Reliable plowing and cleanups after storms. Clear communication so people know what’s being done and what’s next.

As a teacher, I measure results. As a commissioner, I’ve seen how targeted, transparent maintenance makes a neighborhood feel better overnight. That’s the level of sound basic infrastructure I want people to see again in their neighborhoods.

Public Safety

Public safety is essential to a functioning city. We need more officers patrolling and the right support so that a measured response is faster and presence is visible where it matters. People shouldn’t be afraid for themselves, their families, or their property on the way to work, to school, or to the grocery store.

I’m not chasing lofty theories here. I want residents of Ward 12 and all of Minneapolis to notice practical changes: a patrol car rolling down the corridor that’s been ignored, better lighting on streets and alleyways, and a prompt response when you call. Safety you can feel.

Property Taxes

People don’t mind paying taxes when they can see their money at work—not wasted, not disappearing into programs with no results. Families should never get priced out of their homes while services shrink. Higher taxes and fewer basic services met? That’s backwards. As your council member, I will work tirelessly to make sure your tax dollars are wisely expended.

My focus is value for dollar and visible results. If we’re asking more of residents, they should see the basics more—better-maintained streets and parks, safer corridors, cleaner blocks, clearer timelines. Taxes should feel like they’re doing something right where you live.

As a teacher, I’m always focused on helping students and the school itself thrive. I measure, I adjust, and I show the results. I was born and raised in Ward 12, and it’s home. Let’s keep it simple and start where it counts: potholes, public safety, and property taxes. Once the basics are working, we can aim higher together. I ask for your vote.
